Fluoride Treatments
Most people think that fluoride treatments are only for children because fluoride helps to prevent cavities. Here at Dentistry on Sinclair we offer fluoride to all of our patients because anyone can get cavities. Fluoride creates a slick layer on the teeth. This slick layer makes it harder for plaque causing bacteria to attach to the teeth thus preventing plaque from building up as quickly.
What is fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods and water. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugar in the mouth. Fluoride also speeds re-mineralization and disrupts acid production in already erupted teeth in both children and adults.
In the dental office fluoride is applied as a gel, foam or varnish. These treatments contain a higher (but still safe) level of fluoride than the amount found in toothpastes and mouth rinses. Varnishes are painted on the teeth; foams are applied via mouth guard and gels can be applied either way.
Fluoride is most critical during the time of development of both primary and permanent teeth. Both children and adults benefit from fluoride, especially those that have a tendency to develop cavities. Research has proven that topical fluoride is important in fighting tooth decay and in strengthening developing teeth.
